Washington DC: Foreign Minister, NP Saud, who is currently on an official visit to the United States, has called on the US business community to explore investment opportunities in Nepal. He emphasized that Nepal provides an attractive environment for foreign investors, with constitutional provisions allowing for the repatriation of profits and capital to investors' home countries.
Minister Saud assured US investors of the Nepal government's commitment to further enhance the investment-friendly atmosphere in the country. He spoke during an interaction with members of the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington DC, where he encouraged American businesses to consider expanding their investments in Nepal.
The Minister highlighted Nepal's significant potential for exporting electricity to neighboring nations, especially at a time when there is a growing global demand for clean energy to reduce carbon emissions. He suggested that US investors could benefit substantially by investing in Nepal, particularly in the clean energy sector.
Furthermore, Minister Saud recognized the information technology sector as a promising area for US investment in Nepal, stating, "I am confident that IT will be a game changer in Nepal's economic transformation." He also shared that the government had introduced a new policy enabling the establishment of IT companies in Nepal with an investment as low as Rs 100, making the country an appealing destination for IT investment.
Saud explained that Nepal has streamlined its foreign investment process, implementing an automated system where investments of up to Rs 100 million do not require prior approval.
In response to the Minister's call, the US Chamber of Commerce expressed support for the establishment of an American Chamber of Commerce in Nepal. John G. Murphy, Senior Vice President for International Policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and another Chamber Vice President, Atul Kashyap, acknowledged the growing interest of US investors in Nepal.
The event was attended by the US Ambassador to Nepal, Dean R. Thompson, Nepal's Ambassador to the US, Sridhar Khatri, officials from the Nepali Embassy in Washington DC, and Foreign Ministry representatives.
